Crispy Chicken Bento at just $5.00!

By: Sugenya Manogaran

Crispy Chicken Bento @ Snackz It
Bugis Junction Basement

Price: $5.00
Ratings: 3.5/5 stars

It was just another typical day, window shopping with my friends at Bugis Junction.
I have to admit that the basement of the shopping mall was surely a food paradise. Mini shops were lined next to each other selling a diverse range of food, from Japanese pancakes to those mouth-watering donuts.

As melodramatic as it sounds, my feet stopped exactly at the front of the stall, Snackz It. They were selling the crispy chicken bento at just $5.00. Without much hesitation, I bought it and honestly, I have no regrets at all.

While waiting for my dish, I stood there watching how the crispy chicken was being prepared.  Once deep-fried, the chicken is then mixed with different condiments such as pepper and chili powder to enhance the flavor of it.

Alongside with the crispy chicken, a huge portion of steamed rice was served. A spoonful of black pepper sauce was added to complement it.  Other than the rice and crispy chicken, baked beans and coleslaw were also served.

If there is one reason why you should try it, that is definitely because of the unique taste of the chicken. You can eat the rice and chicken as your main meal, and then munch on the baked beans and coleslaw as your dessert!   It’s all in one - grab yours now!

Kok-kok mee!

By Jonas Tay

43 Jalan Besar (Dickson Road)
Price: $3
Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Remember the chicken rice balls which I recommended last week? This noodles store has similar history and sits just opposite the chicken rice ball store. It was given the name “kok-kok mee” because in the past, the stall vendor would send one of his helper to go around the street hitting pieces of bamboo together that gave the sound “kok-kok”. Over time, people recognized the sound and thus named the noodles after the sound.

If you are looking for food which is value for money, then this bowl of noodles would certainly meet your expectations! Fishballs, fishcakes, char siew and minced meat. These are the ingredients used to prepare this delightful bowl of noodles and they come in generous servings too! What makes this dish so good is it's chilli. While some chilli are spicy till the extent that it turns you off, the chilli used in this dish is spicy and sweet. I don’t know about you, but I definitely could not get enough of it.

Be sure to get a can of soft drink if you were to try this dish out!!

Fried Mars Ball @ Chippy
Basement, Far East Plaza

Price: $3.80
Rating: 5/5 stars

Yes, it is believed that anything is good if it is made of chocolate. But literally, ANYTHING?

That was my first thought when I got to know about the Fried Mars Balls from Chippy. Yes, the price might seem too expensive for a simple snack, but trust me, it’s worth every cent.

These balls actually contain the bite-sized Mars chocolates, which is then dipped into a batter and fried. Sounds really horrible? NO, DEFINITELY NOT.

These fried balls are the most heavenly and inexpensive treat, I have ever tasted. With each bite, you could taste the chocolate melting in your mouth. It is served piping hot with either chocolate or vanilla ice-cream.

If you can’t get enough of this mouth-watering treat, you can then opt for the bigger portion at $5.50.

Kuey Chap Kuey Chap, Number 1!

By Jamie Loo

516 North Bridge Road
Liang Seah Street, Bugis
Http://www.yukee.com.sg/

Price: $4.30
Rating: 4.5/5 stars

With just $4.30, you get yourself a Kuey Chap Set. Not just any ordinary Kuey Chap Set, but the best I have come across so far!

We all have eaten Kuey Chap(s) that fail to have that herbal taste in the soup, or Kuey Chap(s) that have so little ingredients or are filled with more cheap ingredients(fish cakes), or the most common ones, those in which the gravy for the ingredients run like water and are not captured in the ingredients. Finding a good Kuey Chap set can be difficult, especially since this dish can be found almost anywhere in Singapore. Just how many do you want to try before arriving at your final decision, right?

So, putting aside all my bad experiences let me tell you about this one.
I was there on a warm day and I had heard about this particular Kuey Chap that is a must try! So I headed over to this little street and order myself a bowl of what I have crowned as the best, KC set. Its meat was so tender, and was obviously prepared with much profession because I could taste the herbs used in the seasoning in the thick sauce which I savoured the pig’s intestines, eggs, fish cake and Kuey (Flat noodles).

The chilli was also one to be complimented. It seemed like there was garlic in the chilli, but whatever it was, it was working really well with the overall ingredients! Put together and eaten in a spoonful, I was once again reminded that simplicity is indeed, the best. This dish, has I must say, fulfilled all the criteria of the Best Kuey Chap. So pardon me for the lack of pictures, because I took my first bite, and the rest was history.

Finding this hard to believe? Send in your opinion of the Best Kuey Chap, and maybe it will take the place of this dish!

Ps: Thank you, Terence Tan, for this wonderful recommendation!

Must try chicken rice balls!

By Jonas Tay

Hainan Chicken Rice Ball
Shin Hoon Hwa Food Centre, 43 Jalan Besar (Dickson Road)
Opening hours: 8.30am-9.30pm

Price:
· $0.80 for a ball of rice
· $2/$3/$4 for chicken
Rating: 5/5 stars

Located along Dickson road where culture and heritage is rich, is a special Hainan chicken rice store. The rice is shaped as a ball and does not fall apart on its own. I always order a minimum of 4 rice balls because it is just sooo delicious!

What is better is that its chicken is very tender! Unlike other chicken rice stores, this one serves its chicken
with dark sauce on it while ensuring that it is not too salty.

There are also other dishes sold by the store such as braised pork which are very heavenly with its tender fats. Many other food blogs such as ieatishootipost have also given rave reviews for this store! With its long history with its business being carried on by its third generation, there is no reason for you not to try it out for yourself!

Fantastic Fishball Noodles

By Abriel Tay

Song Kee Fishball Noodles
532 Upper Serangoon Road
Price: $3 / $4 / $5
Rating: 4/5 stars

Along the road of Upper Serangoon Road lies a bustling food stall that stands out with it's orange walls and oriental Chinese music. Opening at 5.30pm to 3.30am daily except Wednesdays, the stall comes to life at night where all the tables are filled with fishball lovers.

The 30 minutes wait for the 4 dollar portion was worth it as the noodles along with the 3 springy handmade fishballs, fish dumpling and chewy taupok was delicious. Even though I ordered the larger portion, the noodles still remained tasty till the last strand and I even wanted more. What stood out from this mouth-watering combination was the chewy taupok which was unique but tasty.

The soup absorbed by the taupok would seep out upon chewing to the delight of my tastebuds. The fishball comes a close second with a springy texture that makes eating it a joy. I really enjoyed the meal and I really recommend it to fishball noodles lovers.

Price: $5.00
Rating: 4.5/5 stars

If you are a lover of Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup, then you have to try this because this is the best Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup I’ve ever tasted so far.

Located at the food street of Chinatown, this Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup is a must try if you’re looking for something soupy to satisfy your cravings. Even though a huge portion of milk was added to the soup, but the taste of the milk doesn’t overwhelm the taste of the soup. Instead, it complements the soup perfectly!

The bee hun was also chewy and springy, accompanied by large pieces of fish meat and vegetables to complete the dish. Even though it is priced at $5, it is worth every cent of it. However, be sure to specify “Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup” when you make your order, because the Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup comes in XO soup too which is priced at $7!

You’ve not tasted a good Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup if you’ve not tried this! So what are you waiting for? Make a trip down to Chinatown now and try out their famous Fish Meat Bee Hun Soup!

Chicken cutlet rice for just 2 bucks!

By: Sugenya Manogaran

Chicken Cutlet Rice @ Ananas Cafe
Outram Park MRT Station
Price: $2.00
Rating: 3.5/5 stars

The price of this dish is usually $3.50 or above. Imagine my surprise when I came across this stall that was selling it for only $2.00.

Initially, I doubted the portion of rice I would get for this inexpensive dish.  However, I was wrong. With just the right serving of rice and fried chicken cutlet, you just need one plate to satisfy your hunger!  You can also “ up-size’’ your meal at just $3.00.

The rice was served warm, and the chicken was quite crispy. I requested for both lemon sauce and mayonnaise on my chicken, and the mixed taste was so delicious indeed!

Even served with just one cucumber slice, the overall appearance of the dish was still alluring. This is definitely one of the cheapest yet tastiest chicken cutlet rice you’ll ever find!  Don’t forget to grab yours!
